Planning an event can be really fun, especially when it’s a Smurfs theme celebration. You can ask a friend to help in the planning process and make sure you take your time and you are organized with everything. Create posted notes, lists, and write things down on that agenda. You don’t want to be missing party supplies at the last minute. The Smurfs are icons of that colorful decade known as the 1980s. Few people escaped the ‘80s without watching the Saturday morning cartoon, whistling the catchy theme song, and collecting their share of dolls and figurines that were endlessly sunny and iridescently blue.

Along with roller rinks, the Rubik’s Cube and pastel nail polish, the Smurfs Saturday morning cartoon was indeed a classic cultural symbol of America in the 1980s, a decade of color (the hue of blue, in this case?) and positive themes.

That’s why many people are surprised to learn that the Smurfs phenomena actually dates back to the 1950s, and was created by a Belgian cartoonist called Peyo. Once the stars of satirical cartoons in international newspapers, the Smurfs soon appeared in their own big screen motion picture—“The Smurfs and the Magic Flute”—which eventually screened in American theaters, soon after the blockbuster TV cartoon series hit it big on U.S. screens.

And the little blue wonders aren’t done yet. As reruns of the Saturday morning cartoon series air regularly on the Boomerang cartoon channel, the Smurfs are soon set to make their big screen return in the appropriately titled 3D extravaganza, “The Smurfs!” An arty—and downright cute—combination of live action comedy and three-dimensional animation, “The Smurfs” will feature Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria and none other than Katy Perry as the voice of Smurfette. This film is set to be released Aug. 3.
